Our projects are travel-intensive and located throughout the continental US, with much of our current work on the West Coast. We're looking for people who are adaptable, reliable, and genuinely comfortable working in demanding field environments, mostly on boats — and who bring the kind of attention to detail and work ethic that our clients expect.
About the Role
CMA is seeking an Environmental Scientist or Hydrogeologist to serve as a technical lead on field sampling campaigns. You'll operate CMA's specialized proprietary equipment, supervise field technicians, and contribute to data analysis and reporting. Over time, this role is expected to grow into project management and direct client engagement.
This is a project-based, travel-intensive position — work is assigned on a per-project basis with no fixed home office. Projects typically run 2–4 weeks in duration and are located throughout the continental US, primarily on the West Coast. Candidates should expect 3–6 project deployments per year, with potential for growth. All travel and lodging is covered by CMA.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead field sampling campaigns for groundwater seepage, porewater, sediment, and water quality characterization
- Deploy, operate, maintain, and troubleshoot CMA's proprietary instrumentation including UltraSeep meters, Trident Probes, passive sampling devices, piezometers, and data loggers
- Supervise field technicians during project deployments
- Perform QA/QC review of field data; identify and resolve anomalies
- Conduct data analysis including seepage flux calculations and porewater contaminant profiling
- Contribute to preparation of technical reports and project deliverables
- Maintain field safety protocols, HASP compliance, and float plans
Qualifications
- Advanced degree preferred in hydrogeology, environmental science, geology, oceanography, or closely related field
- Demonstrated experience with groundwater–surface water interaction, SGD, or contaminant fate and transport in coastal environments
- Experience with sediment or porewater sampling methods
- Comfortable working on and around the water
- Strong quantitative and analytical skills; proficiency in Excel or similar tools
- Must be a US citizen; access to certain project sites requires US citizenship per federal contract requirements
- Valid driver's license; ability to lift and carry field equipment up to 50 lbs
- Flexible schedule; available for multi-week travel deployments
- Must pass pre-employment background check and random drug screening
Required Certifications (CMA Will Support)
- HAZWOPER 40-hour training
- First Aid / CPR certification
- Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC)
- Boater safety course

About the Role
CMA is seeking a Field Technician to support field operations by performing equipment deployment and retrieval, environmental monitoring, water and sediment sampling, and data recording at project sites on or adjacent to water. Work is conducted primarily from small inshore vessels and shoreside access points.
This is a project-based, travel-intensive position — work is assigned on a per-project basis with no fixed worksite. All equipment is stored in and shipped from our Southold, NY facility, and the ideal candidate lives nearby. Projects typically run 2–4 weeks and are located throughout the continental US, with much of the work on the West Coast. Candidates should expect 3–6 deployments per year. All travel and lodging is covered by CMA. No field work takes place in New York.
Key Responsibilities
- Deploy, operate, maintain, and retrieve proprietary environmental monitoring equipment including seepage meters, probes, and passive sampling devices
- Assist with staging, packing, and shipping of equipment
- Assist with equipment maintenance, calibration, cleaning, and inventory between deployments
- Collect water, sediment, and porewater samples following established field protocols
- Record field data accurately; maintain field logs, chain-of-custody forms, and site documentation
- Follow all safety protocols, float plans, and site-specific health and safety procedures
- Support senior staff in day-to-day field logistics
Qualifications
- Must be comfortable working on and around the water; prior marine field experience preferred
- No specific educational requirement — CMA will provide full training; environmental sampling experience or related degree is a plus
